The material consists of low-carbon steel with an electrolytically deposited tin coating. It can be processed into printed can bodies, lids, closures and decorative containers. Not every thickness, temper and size combination is available. Confirm the applicable standard edition, dimensional tolerances, coating requirements, surface treatment and order quantity before purchase.
How Different Tin Coatings Compare
Coating notation gives the nominal tin mass on each face. For example, 2.8/2.8 g/m² means 2.8 g/m² per face, or 5.6 grams across both faces of one square meter of material. Tin coating mass and steel thickness are separate specifications.
Light Coatings: 1.1/1.1 and 2.8/2.8 g/m²
These options use less tin than heavier coatings. They can be considered when the packaging design and coating system have been validated at that level. A low tin weight should not be selected solely because the can will receive an internal lacquer.
Heavier Coatings: 5.6/5.6 and 8.4/8.4 g/m²
These grades provide more nominal tin on both faces. Evaluate them against the buyer's specification and package-testing results. Higher tin weight does not increase the hardness of the steel or guarantee a particular food shelf life. For 11.2/11.2 g/m² or other requirements, ask us to confirm supply availability.
Differential Coatings: More Tin on One Face
For 5.6/2.8 g/m², one face receives a heavier coating than the other. This can match different requirements for the two surfaces without specifying the heavier coating on both. Confirm the intended inside and outside faces, identification method and stacking direction before printing or forming.
Cost comparison: 5.6/2.8 uses 8.4 grams of nominal tin per square meter of material, versus 11.2 grams for 5.6/5.6. The difference is 25% of tin coating mass, not 25% of the total material price.
Plan the Blank Before Choosing the Plate Size
Send the component layout as well as the requested plate dimensions. Include printing margins, trim allowance, weld margins where applicable, and the preferred rolling direction. This makes it possible to compare usable output from different cutting arrangements.
For example, a 1000 × 1000 mm sheet can theoretically hold sixteen rectangular 250 × 250 mm blanks with no allowance. Real production may require space for trimming, printing or cutting, so the usable count can be lower. Quotations and yield comparisons should use the production layout rather than area alone.
Agree flatness, squareness and edge-burr limits with your processor. For repeat purchasing, keep the same acceptance criteria so incoming material can be compared consistently.
Plate and Coil Applications
Flat plates and sheets suit sheet-fed metal printing, batch coating and blanking operations. They are useful when the buyer wants specified dimensions without operating an uncoiling and cutting line. Typical downstream products include food-can bodies, tea tins, biscuit boxes and selected lid components.
Tinplate coils suit converters with appropriate uncoiling, leveling and cutting equipment, or compatible coil-fed presses. A converter can prepare several blank sizes from coil stock, but must include handling capacity, changeovers and conversion yield in the purchasing decision.

Printed Food Can Bodies
A can maker ordering flat blanks should supply the can dimensions, body layout, welding allowance and coating specification. The material needs to work through printing, cylinder forming, welding and flanging. Pet Food Lids and Easy-Open Ends

A printer can use cut plates sized around the artwork and press requirements. Approve a printed and formed sample to assess registration, metallic appearance and coating damage around bends. The decision should account for the completed tin, not only a flat printed sample.

An MTC verifies material information and does not replace food-contact testing or finished-package validation.

Does “tinplate plate” mean thick steel plate?

Can I replace SR material with DR?
Only after reviewing the component and conducting suitable forming trials. The same thickness does not mean the two materials have equivalent mechanical behavior.

Are the plates supplied printed or lacquered?
