“Petroleum cracking pipe” is a familiar trade name for seamless tubes and pipes supplied to refinery and petrochemical process equipment. Depending on the engineering specification, the material may serve process piping, furnace or heater circuits, or heat-exchanger components. It is selected for the actual combination of pressure, temperature, medium, corrosion exposure and fabrication method; the trade name alone does not define a safe operating rating.
In China, the current GB/T 9948-2025 is titled Seamless steel tubes and pipes for petrochemical and chemical facilities. It replaced the older GB/T 9948-2013 “seamless steel tubes for petroleum cracking” on 1 January 2026. For export projects, GDD Metal can also source against an explicitly specified ASTM or EN material standard, subject to the approved grade, mill route and purchaser requirements. Send the line class or equipment drawing for an accurate quotation.

Dimensions and grades above illustrate inquiry formats; they are not a claim of stock or interchangeability. Final chemistry, properties, wall tolerance, testing and service suitability follow the exact standard edition, purchase order and engineering design.
A refinery pipe may itself be made of carbon steel. What makes it suitable for a given process circuit is the specified material grade, controlled manufacturing and heat-treatment condition, pressure design, inspection, traceability and compatibility with the operating medium. General-purpose carbon pipe should not be substituted simply because its outside diameter and nominal wall look similar.
Galvanized pipe is steel with a zinc coating commonly selected for atmospheric corrosion protection. Zinc coating does not establish high-temperature strength, process-fluid compatibility or pressure-system acceptance. Conversely, an ASTM A106 pipe may be suitable for a defined refinery line if the engineer specifies it; “petroleum cracking pipe” is not a single alloy grade or a guarantee that only one national standard applies. For other applications, see our general carbon steel seamless pipe and galvanized round pipe pages.
Provide design and operating temperatures, design pressure, pressure cycles and required service life. Grade and wall must be checked using the relevant piping or equipment design code, allowable stress, corrosion allowance and joint details. At elevated temperatures, suitable long-term material behavior and heat-treatment condition matter; a room-temperature tensile value alone cannot establish high-temperature suitability.
Identify hydrocarbon streams, water, chlorides, H2S, hydrogen and any cleaning or upset conditions that may affect corrosion or cracking. For wet H2S in refining, request the applicable ISO 17945 / NACE MR0103 material requirements and any additional owner specification. Such a requirement must be evaluated for the actual circuit; an MTC or a generic “H2S resistant” label does not, by itself, certify suitability.
State the weld procedure, bends, end preparation, required impact tests, heat treatment, hydrostatic or NDT method and third-party witness points. Heat number and pipe markings should remain traceable through cutting and installation. For heater or exchanger tubes, confirm the applicable tube specification and equipment drawing rather than assuming that a process-pipe specification covers every component.
Middle East: EPC contractors and refinery owners commonly procure to a named ASTM/ASME material specification and ASME B31.3 line class, then add approved-mill, corrosion, inspection and document requirements. For wet sour circuits, the owner's ISO 17945 / NACE MR0103 provisions may be decisive. Country location alone does not determine the required grade.
North America: ASTM A106 carbon pipe or ASTM A335 alloy pipe can be specified for relevant high-temperature duties, while ASME B31.3 governs the process piping design and construction scope. The engineer defines the exact grade, schedule or wall, additional testing and owner specifications. A material standard and a piping design code perform different jobs.
Europe: EN 10216-2:2024 provides a current material route for applicable seamless pressure tubes with elevated-temperature properties. Pressure equipment supplied to the EU may also require assessment under Directive 2014/68/EU according to its scope. The equipment or assembly conformity route must be determined for the project; a loose pipe should not be advertised as automatically “PED certified” or CE marked merely because its material is to an EN standard.
Africa: Refinery projects may specify ASTM/ASME, EN or a contractual GB material route, depending on the EPC contractor and owner. Confirm the adopted code, mill acceptance, third-party inspection, destination documents and port or inland handling conditions for the specific country. There is no single Africa-wide pipe performance standard.
Refinery process-line replacement: A maintenance contractor sends the original line class, fluid, design temperature and an MTO. We compare the requested material and end finish against an available mill offer, then agree heat-number traceability and shipment documents before production.
High-temperature heater project: An EPC team separates the furnace, exchanger and process-line material lists. It specifies the correct pipe or tube standard for each circuit and requests heat-treatment evidence plus any supplementary tests in the inspection plan.
Export to a coastal petrochemical plant: A distributor orders several diameters with cut lengths and protected bevels. The quotation lists material and processing separately, while bundle marks link each size and heat to its MTC. These are illustrative purchasing workflows, not verified customer testimonials or operating results.
We can coordinate the mill test certificate (MTC), heat-number traceability and agreed inspection records. If an EN 10204 3.1 document or third-party inspection is required, include its exact scope in the purchase order so the selected mill and inspector can confirm it before production. An MTC records material results; the plant designer still determines fitness for the actual pressure and corrosion service.
By contract and destination, export paperwork can include a certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, customs documents and export license where legally required. Pipe ends can be capped, bundles identified and surfaces protected for sea transport. Required legalization, language or project forms should be confirmed before shipment.
No. GB/T 9948-2025 took effect on 1 January 2026 and replaced GB/T 9948-2013. Specify the edition in a new purchase order; do not treat a legacy MTC as evidence of compliance with the new edition without review.
No. Their chemistry, properties, dimensions, testing and documentation must be compared against the actual standard editions and owner specification. Obtain written engineering approval for any substitution.
No automatic substitution is possible. A zinc coating does not establish the base material and service requirements for a refinery pressure circuit.
No. This page concerns refinery and petrochemical process pipe. Well casing is OCTG selected to a separate casing specification such as API 5CT.
Send the MTO with material standard and edition, grade, OD and wall or NPS and schedule, length, quantity, line class, design temperature and pressure, medium, inspection scope, end finish, delivery port and document list. Existing drawings and a previous MTC help prevent mismatched quotes.
Share your line class or equipment list. We will review the sourcing route, cut lengths, inspection and traceability requirements, export packing and document schedule for the approved specification.
