What Is Carbon Steel Welded Pipe?

Carbon Steel Welded Pipe is manufactured from steel strip, coil or plate rather than directly from a pierced solid billet.

The steel is progressively formed into a round section, after which the edges are joined through a controlled welding process. Depending on diameter and application, the process can use ERW, HFW, longitudinal submerged arc welding or spiral submerged arc welding.

Modern welded-pipe production allows high dimensional consistency, efficient mass production and competitive material cost across a broad range of structural and industrial applications.

ERW Carbon Steel Pipe

ERW means Electric Resistance Welded. It is one of the most widely used manufacturing methods for small- and medium-diameter carbon steel round pipes.

During production, steel strip or coil is continuously formed into a cylindrical shape. Electrical resistance heating is concentrated at the strip edges, and controlled pressure forms the longitudinal weld.

ERW pipes are widely used for structural fabrication, water transportation, fencing, scaffolding, machinery and general industrial applications.

HFW Welded Steel Pipe

HFW refers to High Frequency Welding and is commonly used in modern welded-pipe production.

High-frequency electrical energy heats the strip edges before they are forged together under pressure, producing a continuous longitudinal joint.

Production parameters, weld-zone treatment and inspection requirements depend on the applicable material standard and intended service.

LSAW and SSAW Welded Pipe

For larger outside diameters and heavier wall requirements, LSAW or SSAW production routes can be considered.

LSAW uses a longitudinal submerged arc welded seam and is commonly considered for large-diameter pipeline and structural projects.

SSAW uses a spiral-forming and submerged arc welding process and is commonly used for large-diameter water, piling and pipeline applications.

Actual manufacturing-route availability should be confirmed according to the required OD, wall thickness, grade, standard and quantity.

Welded Pipe vs Seamless Pipe

The main difference between welded and seamless pipe is the manufacturing route.

Welded pipe is formed from steel strip, coil or plate and contains a controlled weld seam. Seamless pipe is produced from a solid billet without a longitudinal weld.

Welded pipe is often more economical and provides strong dimensional consistency for structural, water, fabrication and general industrial applications.

Seamless pipe may be specified for selected high-pressure, high-temperature or specialized services. The correct choice should always follow the applicable engineering code and project specification.

ASTM A53 Welded Steel Pipe

ASTM A53 is widely specified for carbon steel pipe used in mechanical, pressure and general-purpose applications.

ASTM A53 Grade B ERW pipe is commonly requested for water systems, industrial piping, fabrication and construction.

Customers should specify grade, type, schedule, surface condition, end preparation and testing requirements according to ASTM A53/A53M and the project specification.

ASTM A500 Welded Round Pipe

ASTM A500 covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing in round and other hollow shapes.

ASTM A500 round welded tubes are widely used for structural frames, columns, supports, machinery, guardrails and fabricated steel assemblies.

Structural designers should specify the required grade, dimensions, wall thickness and design properties according to the applicable project documents.

API 5L Welded Line Pipe

API 5L covers steel line pipe used in pipeline transportation systems within the petroleum and natural gas industries.

Welded API 5L pipe can be produced using suitable ERW/HFW or submerged arc welding processes according to diameter and grade.

Grade, product specification level, dimensions, testing and documentation should be confirmed according to the applicable API 5L edition and customer specification.

Carbon Steel Welded Pipe for Structural Applications

Round welded steel pipe is widely used in steel structures because it provides efficient material usage, clean geometry and convenient welding and fabrication.

Common applications include columns, trusses, frames, handrails, supports, warehouses, platforms and equipment structures.

Structural suitability and load capacity should always be confirmed by the project engineer according to section properties, steel grade, connection design and applicable building code.

Welded Round Pipe for Machinery

Machinery manufacturers use welded round tubing for machine frames, rollers, guards, support members and fabricated equipment.

In these applications, OD tolerance, wall thickness, straightness, surface condition and weld quality can be important selection factors.

Fixed-length cutting, drilling and other fabrication services can be discussed according to drawings and production capability.

Welded Pipe for Water and Fluid Transmission

Suitable welded carbon steel pipe can be used for water distribution and other fluid-transmission systems according to the applicable standard.

Wall thickness, coating, connection method and testing should be selected according to design pressure, installation conditions and service environment.

Hydrostatic or applicable non-destructive testing can be specified where required by the material standard or purchase contract.

Welded Pipe for Fencing and Guardrails

Carbon steel welded round pipe is commonly used for fence posts, rails, barriers, gates and guardrail structures.

Black, painted or hot-dip galvanized finishes can be selected according to appearance and corrosion-protection requirements.

Customized fixed lengths can reduce cutting operations during fence or railing installation.

Welded Pipe for Scaffolding

Welded round steel tubes are widely used in scaffolding systems and temporary construction structures where the correct grade, dimensions and system approvals are specified.

Common requirements can include controlled outside diameter, wall thickness, fixed length, straightness and galvanized or painted surface treatment.

Scaffolding components should always comply with the applicable system design, safety standard and engineering requirements of the destination market.

Black Welded Steel Pipe

Black welded pipe is supplied without a zinc coating and retains the typical dark steel surface from production and handling.

It is widely used for fabrication, structural supports, machinery and applications where additional coating will be applied after fabrication.

Temporary anti-rust oil or primer can be applied when additional storage or transportation protection is required.

Galvanized Welded Steel Pipe

Welded carbon steel pipe can be hot-dip galvanized after production to improve corrosion protection for outdoor and humid environments.

Galvanized welded pipe is widely used for fencing, greenhouse frames, structural supports, outdoor equipment and selected fluid applications.

Zinc coating requirements, surface appearance and applicable galvanizing standard should be confirmed when placing an order.

Painted and Coated Welded Pipe

Primer painting and other protective coating systems can be applied where customers require additional corrosion protection or specific surface appearance.

Red oxide primer, black coating and other project-specific finishes can be discussed according to application requirements.

Coating type and dry-film requirements should be confirmed before production for projects with specified corrosion-protection systems.

Pipe Diameter and Wall Thickness Selection

Welded round steel pipe can be specified using exact outside diameter and wall thickness or according to nominal pipe size and schedule for applicable piping standards.

Pipe weight, inside diameter and structural section properties change significantly as wall thickness changes.

Customers should provide the exact OD, wall thickness, length and applicable tolerance whenever possible to avoid specification ambiguity.

Pipe Schedule

Piping applications may specify standard wall thicknesses through schedule designations such as SCH 20, SCH 40 and SCH 80.

A schedule number does not represent one fixed wall thickness for every pipe diameter. Actual wall thickness depends on the corresponding nominal pipe size and dimensional standard.

For quotation, customers can provide NPS + schedule or the exact OD × wall thickness specification.

Pipe End Options

Plain ends are commonly supplied for structural fabrication and general welding.

Beveled ends can be prepared for suitable butt-welded piping systems, while threaded or grooved ends can be supplied where the pipe size and applicable connection standard allow.

Plastic or metal end caps can also be added to protect prepared pipe ends during transportation.

Cutting and Fabrication Services

Carbon Steel Welded Pipe can be cut to customized fixed lengths according to machinery, structural and fabrication drawings.

Additional services can include beveling, threading, grooving, drilling, hole punching and selected welding operations.

Customers should provide drawings and dimensional tolerances where finished fabrication is required.
