Electrolytic Tinplate Sheets for Printing and Can Making

GDD Metal supplies electrolytic tinplate sheets for buyers who need flat, cut-to-size material for metal printing, can-body production and component stamping. Specify the sheet layout, steel temper and tin coating together to match your equipment and finished packaging.

ETP combines a low-carbon steel substrate with an electrolytically deposited tin coating. The steel provides strength and formability; the coated surface supports further lacquering, printing and suitable welding operations. Sheet supply is particularly useful for processors with sheet-fed equipment or limited coil-conversion capacity.

Available combinations depend on thickness, temper, finish and order quantity. Confirm the standard edition, dimensional tolerances, flatness, squareness, edge condition and surface treatment before ordering. Coating values are nominal and stated per face.

Understanding Different Tin Coating Weights

2.8/2.8 g/m² means 2.8 g/m² on each face, giving 5.6 grams of nominal tin coating across both faces of one square meter of sheet. It does not mean 2.8 grams in total. Equal coatings use the same nominal weight on both faces; differential coatings use different weights.

1.1/1.1 and 2.8/2.8 g/m²

These lighter coating options reduce tin consumption. Consider them where the complete packaging system has been qualified for that coating level. Do not assume that a lighter coating suits every lacquered food can simply because an internal lacquer is present.

5.6/5.6 g/m²

This option contains twice the nominal tin mass of 2.8/2.8 on each face. Evaluate it when the buyer's specification or package testing supports a heavier coating. Twice the tin mass does not mean twice the shelf life.

8.4/8.4 and 11.2/11.2 g/m²

Heavier coating specifications are available in the tinplate industry for designs requiring them; ask us to confirm availability. Selection should account for product compatibility and cost. Additional tin cannot compensate for unsuitable lacquer, damaged coatings or defective seams.

Differential Coatings Such as 5.6/2.8 g/m²

Differential coating can allocate more tin to the face requiring it. A 5.6/2.8 specification contains 8.4 g/m² in total, compared with 11.2 g/m² for 5.6/5.6. That is 25% less nominal tin coating mass, not a 25% reduction in sheet price. Agree how the two faces will be identified and stacked.

What Matters When Buying Cut Sheets?

Sheet layout: Provide the usable printing area, gripper margin, cutting allowance and blank arrangement. A size that fits the press may still produce unnecessary trim waste if the component layout is overlooked.

Flatness and squareness: Agree acceptance limits against your feeding and registration requirements. Ask for checks on the delivered sheet format rather than relying only on the dimensions of the original coil.

Temper and forming direction: Select material using the component drawing and forming operations. Substituting DR for SR material requires trials; the same thickness alone does not establish equivalent performance.

Surface condition: Specify which face will be printed or contact the internal coating. Review scratches, oiling and handling requirements with your printer or coater before production.

Tinplate Sheet or Tinplate Coil?

Choose sheets when your line uses flat-sheet printing, batch lacquering or sheet-fed blanking. They arrive in the agreed dimensions and avoid the need to uncoil and cut master coils at your facility.

Choose coils when you have suitable uncoiling, leveling and cutting equipment or a compatible coil-fed press. Coil buyers can adjust conversion layouts, but must account for coil handling, conversion cost, scrap and equipment capacity.

Application Examples for Packaging Buyers

The examples below illustrate material-selection decisions. They are not claims about completed customer orders or measured production results.

Printed Food Can Bodies

A food-can producer buying sheets for a welded three-piece can should provide the body blank layout, weld margins and approved coating system. For tomato products, review the actual filling formulation and thermal process when selecting the internal coating. Confirm performance through forming, welding, seaming and filled-pack evaluation.

Easy-Open Ends and Closures

A lid factory should specify the end drawing, tooling arrangement, temper, gauge and required coating. Trial components need checks appropriate to the design, including score consistency, opening force, coating integrity and seam performance. Tea Tins, Biscuit Tins and Gift Boxes

A packaging printer can order sheets to match the artwork and blank layout. Review a printed and formed sample for registration, surface appearance and coating damage around bends. Selecting sheet size around the actual component arrangement helps identify opportunities to reduce trim waste without assuming a fixed saving.

Coils Converted into Multiple Sheet Sizes

A service center supplying several can makers may prefer master coils and cut different blank sizes as orders change. Compare that flexibility against changeover time, inventory, leveling capability and yield. A converter with limited volume may find pre-cut sheets more practical.

Quality Records and Export Documentation

For material acceptance, agree checks for thickness, sheet dimensions, squareness, flatness, mechanical properties, coating on each face and surface condition. Bundle identification should connect the supplied sheets with the relevant material records.

Food-contact reports must cover the supplied material or coating system and the intended conditions of use. An MTC does not replace food-contact testing. Where a package requires lacquer, confirm the lacquer specification and finished-pack suitability separately from the metallic tin coating.

Packing and Storage

Sheet packs can be protected with moisture-resistant wrapping, edge protection, covers and secure strapping. Confirm maximum bundle weight and unloading arrangements before shipment. Store indoors in dry conditions, protect against condensation, and avoid sliding sheets against one another during handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ETP and SPTE different materials?

ETP refers to electrolytic tinplate, while SPTE is a designation used in JIS specifications. Confirm the complete grade and standard rather than treating either abbreviation as a full purchasing specification.

Does a bright finish mean a heavier tin coating?

No. Finish describes surface appearance and texture; coating weight specifies tin mass. Order both characteristics explicitly.

Can the sheets be printed directly?

They can be used as substrates for metal printing after the preparation and coating steps required by the printing system. Specify whether you want unprinted material, lacquered sheets or finished printed sheets.

How can I estimate sheet weight?

Approximate steel substrate weight in kilograms = thickness in mm × width in meters × length in meters × 7.85. For example, a 0.20 mm × 1.00 m × 1.00 m sheet has a substrate weight of about 1.57 kg, before adding tin, other coatings and packing. Actual shipment weight depends on measured dimensions and tolerances.
