Hot-Rolled Steel Rail
Rail selection begins with the track drawing, not a rail's weight alone. Henan GDD supplies hot-rolled railway rails for approved track profiles, with the grade, length, inspection scope and delivery documents agreed before quotation. Send your rail-section designation or cross-section drawing so we can check whether the proposed rail fits the wheel, fastening and joint system.
What Makes a Railway Rail Different?
A flat-bottom railway rail has a head for wheel contact, a web that transfers load, and a foot that bears on the fastening and sleeper. Its section must maintain the specified running surface under repeated wheel loads, impact and wear. The ordered profile, steel grade and inspection requirements therefore matter as much as the nominal mass in kg/m.
Product Parameters
| Item | Ordering specification |
|---|---|
| Product | Hot-rolled flat-bottom railway rail |
| Standard | GB/T 2585-2021, EN 13674-1 or EN 13674-4, or an agreed project specification; specify edition |
| Profile / section mass | Exact standard profile or approved drawing and corresponding nominal kg/m; mill availability to be checked |
| Steel grade | Grade under the selected standard; R260 or R350HT only where specified and confirmed by the mill |
| Length / ends | Length, cut tolerance, end squareness and joint drilling per approved order or drawing |
| Quality checks | Chemistry, mechanical properties, hardness, geometry, straightness, surface and internal soundness as required by the agreed standard |
| Identification | Heat, grade, profile and bundle marking according to contract |
| Documents / delivery | MTC, agreed inspection records, COO, commercial and shipping documents; export packing and loading plan by length |
Available profiles, lengths, grades and tests depend on the producing mill. The approved purchase specification and MTC govern the supplied material.
Choose the Standard Before the Grade
GB/T 2585-2021 covers hot-rolled railway rails under the Chinese standard system. For European flat-bottom railway rails, EN 13674-1 addresses profiles of 46 kg/m and above, while EN 13674-4 addresses profiles from 27 kg/m to below 46 kg/m. For a North American tee-rail specification, ASTM A1 is another reference. These documents are not interchangeable purchase descriptions: confirm the exact section, grade, edition and project acceptance criteria.
Crane rails have different wheel-contact and mounting requirements. A crane-track inquiry should identify its crane-rail section and governing standard rather than substitute a railway rail solely because its kg/m figure looks similar.
Why Rail Steel Has Special Acceptance Requirements
Section geometry and straightness
Head width and contour affect wheel contact; foot geometry affects fastening fit; height, web dimensions and straightness affect assembly and running alignment. Specify the profile and permitted tolerances so installers can verify compatibility before laying track.
Wear, fatigue and internal quality
Repeated wheel contact creates wear and cyclic stresses. The project grade and any head-hardening requirement should reflect axle load, traffic and track design. Chemical control, hardness or mechanical tests, visual checks and any required internal inspection help identify material or production defects before installation. State the required test method, coverage and acceptance class in the order.
Traceability
Ask for heat-linked markings and an MTC showing the results required by the applicable specification. Heat traceability helps connect delivered bundles to their test records and simplifies project acceptance.
Hot Rolled vs Cold Rolled: Which Process Makes Railway Rails?
Rail blooms or billets are heated and passed through shaped rolling stands to form the head, web and foot. Controlled cooling, straightening, cutting and inspection follow; some specified grades also receive rail-head heat treatment. Cold rolling is not the usual production route for full-size railway rails. It is commonly associated with thinner sheet, strip or other products made with further deformation below recrystallization temperature. A hot-rolled rail can still undergo later straightening, finishing or heat treatment: “hot rolled” describes how the main section is formed, not the complete quality specification.
Illustrative Buyer Scenarios
Freight-line replacement
A track contractor replacing worn rails sends the existing profile, rail length, fastening details and traffic requirements. Matching the approved section and grade avoids choosing a rail by weight alone. Required welding and inspection records are added to the purchase specification.
Industrial siding extension
A plant extending a siding sends the track drawing, existing joint arrangement and unloading constraints. The supplier reviews profile availability, end preparation, bundle marking and feasible shipping lengths before quoting.
High-wear curve
An engineer considering a harder rail for a curve compares the approved grade and head treatment with maintenance records and welding procedures. A harder grade is selected only after checking the full track specification.
These are example procurement scenarios, not representations of completed customer projects or testimonials.
Export Documents and Delivery
Confirm grade, heat traceability, inspection scope and document format when ordering. We can arrange an MTC, certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list and shipping papers under the confirmed contract. An export license can be supplied where applicable and legally required. Long rail lengths may need a different packing and loading plan from short, container-suitable lengths; confirm the destination and discharge arrangements before quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same kg/m rail replace my existing track rail?
Not automatically. Compare the complete cross-section, grade, tolerances, fastening fit and applicable standard.
Is R350HT simply a heavier R260 rail?
No. R260 and R350HT refer to different material conditions or grades, not rail mass. The rail profile and the steel grade must each be specified.
Is ultrasonic testing included with every shipment?
Testing follows the agreed standard and order. State any additional inspection coverage and acceptance criteria before production.
What should I send for a quote?
Send the rail profile or drawing, standard and edition, grade, length, quantity, end processing, inspection requirements, delivery port and required certificates. Include an existing MTC if the order must match an installed rail.
Request a Rail Specification Review
Send your track drawing or current rail designation for a profile and document review before pricing. For crane, mining and other rail categories, see our steel rail range.
