Regular Spangle Galvanized Coil with a Visible Metallic Finish
GDD Metal supplies regular spangle galvanized coil for buyers who want the recognizable zinc crystal appearance on unpainted steel products. It can be processed into roofing profiles, ventilation parts, building accessories and general fabricated components when the grade and coating meet the application requirements.
This product combines continuous hot-dip galvanized steel with a specified visible surface appearance. Order the zinc coating mass and steel properties separately from spangle: a similar-looking surface does not establish an equivalent material specification.

What Is Zinc Spangle?
Spangle is the visible crystal pattern that develops as the zinc coating solidifies. Its appearance is influenced by coating chemistry and processing conditions. It is part of the metallic coating, not a printed design or an embossed tread pattern.
Spangle shape and size are not identical across every point of a coil. If the finish matters visually, agree an acceptable appearance range using representative samples instead of expecting a repeating decorative pattern.
Regular Spangle vs Minimized and Zero Spangle
Regular spangle: Visible zinc crystals create the familiar galvanized appearance. This is the focus of this product page.
Minimized spangle: A less prominent visible pattern may be preferred where a subtler finish is wanted.
Zero spangle: The crystal pattern is barely visible to the naked eye. It still has zinc coating and is often considered for visible painted components.
Spangle size alone does not prove coating weight, corrosion resistance or steel strength. For a smooth painted finish, also agree surface quality, skin pass, pretreatment and paint compatibility.
Specify the Zinc Coating Independently
Coating selection should follow the project specification and exposure conditions. Do not lower the required zinc mass simply because a lighter-coated sample has an attractive spangle.
Light Commercial Coatings
Coating targets around 30–80 g/m² total both sides use less zinc. Consider them only for applications whose specification and exposure allow that level of protection. Commercial shorthand such as Z30 or Z40 is not a universally recognized coating class under every standard.
Intermediate Coatings
Targets around 100–180 g/m² provide more zinc per unit area. Review condensation, storage conditions, forming and any subsequent painting when comparing options. A broad description such as “indoor use” is insufficient if the component will remain damp.
Heavier Coatings
Requirements around 200–275 g/m² provide a greater zinc reserve under comparable conditions. They may be selected where the project requires stronger atmospheric protection. Coastal exposure, trapped water and damaged edges still need consideration; a coating number alone cannot guarantee service life.
Understanding Total-Both-Sides Values
Common Z coating designations specify zinc mass across both faces. Z275 refers to a 275 g/m² total-both-sides requirement under the applicable standard, not 275 g/m² on each face. Confirm the test method and minimum acceptance criteria.
As a simple mass comparison, 275 g/m² is 2.75 times 100 g/m². That ratio describes zinc mass, not guaranteed service life or the total coil price. Steel grade, gauge, processing and order quantity also affect the quotation.
Approve Appearance Before Production
For exposed products, include an appearance reference with your inquiry. Photograph the sample under consistent lighting and identify which face will be visible after forming. Discuss acceptable variation across the width and between coils.
For adjacent panels, assess a formed sample at the intended viewing distance. This helps establish a practical visual acceptance standard rather than relying only on a close-up of bare coil.
Keep appearance acceptance separate from material inspection. The approved sample does not replace coating-mass results, mechanical-property records or dimensional checks.
Application Examples
The following scenarios illustrate purchasing considerations. They are not verified customer orders or testimonials.
Unpainted Roofing Profiles
A roofing producer wants the traditional galvanized finish on profiled sheets. Supply the profile drawing, developed strip width, project grade and coating specification. Approve a formed appearance sample and check the production trial for profile dimensions and coating condition at bends.
Ventilation Components
A fabricator producing visible ventilation parts may accept regular spangle as the final metallic appearance. Confirm the duct or component specification, joining process and moisture exposure. Appearance approval should accompany checks for forming performance and surface cleanliness.
Building Flashings and Accessories
A supplier making flashings for a project should agree the finish across parts that will be installed together. Include bend details, fasteners, drainage and exposure in the material review. A reference sample helps communicate the expected appearance to both the fabricator and buyer.
Distributors Converting Coils into Sheets
A service center can order coil dimensions around its cutting line and customer sheet layouts. Keep coil identification through conversion so sheet bundles can be traced to their inspection records. Buyers without coil-processing equipment can select our galvanized steel sheets.
Processing and Coil Handling Requirements
Provide the uncoiler's inside-diameter range, maximum outside diameter and weight capacity. For slit coils, specify strip width, burr limits and edge requirements. Choose the steel grade from the forming or structural requirement, not from the desired spangle.
If the coil will be painted, agree the surface treatment with the downstream coater and evaluate a finished sample. For products supplied with an organic color coating, explore our PPGI and PPGL range.
Inspection and Export Support
GDD Metal can provide an MTC, Certificate of Origin, export license where required, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and relevant customs documents. Confirm destination-specific requirements before order placement to support compliant export procedures.
Agree the inspection scope for thickness, width, mechanical properties, zinc coating, surface condition, coil weight and identification. Third-party inspection can be arranged by agreement. Request the relevant records before shipment when they are part of your acceptance process.
Protect coils from moisture and handling damage with suitable wrapping, edge protection and transport restraints. Inspect deliveries for wet packing and store material in dry conditions with measures to prevent condensation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does regular spangle mean large spangle?
Not necessarily. State the appearance you want and provide a reference sample. Requests for a particularly large pattern require separate mill confirmation.
Can the same visible finish have different zinc coatings?
Yes. Specify and inspect the coating mass independently from appearance. Do not use a photograph to establish a Z designation.
Can regular spangle coil be painted?
It may be painted with suitable preparation and a compatible coating system. Where final smoothness is critical, compare a completed sample with a suitable zero-spangle alternative.
Is visible spangle the same as Galvalume?
No. This product has a zinc coating. Galvalume uses an aluminum-zinc alloy coating. Confirm the coating system rather than identifying it by visible pattern alone.
Can you guarantee identical appearance on every coil?
Agree a realistic acceptable range before ordering. Use representative samples and consistent viewing conditions when assessing visual variation.
What determines MOQ and lead time?
The grade, dimensions, coating, appearance requirements, processing and quantity determine the offer. Include your target delivery date with the inquiry.
